To obtain temporary residency in Argentina, you need to qualify under a recognized immigration category and provide the documents that support it. The general requirements cover your identity, criminal-record history, address and, for an application made within Argentina, lawful entry. A separate part of the application establishes why you qualify: an eligible nationality, employment, recognized studies, a family relationship, qualifying income or a pension. Having the general documents ready will not make up for missing the requirement that defines your category.
Your nationality, how you entered Argentina and your current immigration status also determine which application route is available. Someone applying from abroad may need a consular procedure, while an eligible person already in Argentina can generally begin through RaDEX, the immigration authority’s online residence application system. Before ordering certificates or paying fees, establish both the category you can prove and where you are allowed to apply.
What temporary residency means
Residencia temporaria (temporary residence) is permission to live in Argentina for a defined period under a particular immigration category. It supports an application for a Documento Nacional de Identidad, or DNI (national identity document). The DNI documents your status; it is not a separate route to obtaining it. A visa, where required, concerns your admission to Argentina under the purpose and category authorized. A tourist visa does not grant temporary residence.
The distinction between temporaria and transitoria matters. Residencia transitoria (transitory residence) covers shorter stays for specified purposes, including tourism, and does not qualify you for a DNI. Residencia permanente (permanent residence) has no fixed expiration date, although it remains subject to conditions and possible cancellation. Migraciones, Argentina’s national immigration authority, explains these distinctions in its overview of residence categories.
A residencia precaria (provisional residence permit) is different again. Migraciones may issue it while a residence application is pending. Under Article 20 of the Immigration Law, it is valid for up to 90 calendar days and may be renewed by a reasoned decision. While valid, it permits staying, working, studying, leaving and reentering Argentina. It does not mean the requested residence has been approved, and time covered only by a precaria does not count toward the residence period required for permanent residence.
Choose the category your documents can support
The main temporary residence routes relevant to international residents are summarized below. Each has its own eligibility rules, in addition to the general documentation requirements.
| Route | Who it is for | Evidence specific to the route |
|---|---|---|
| MERCOSUR nationality | Nationals covered by Argentina’s regional residence rules | Accepted identity and nationality documents; naturalization evidence where relevant |
| Employment | Applicants hired under a qualifying employment relationship in Argentina | Signed employment documentation and the employer’s tax and immigration registrations |
| Studies | Regular students in officially recognized programs | Electronic enrollment confirmation from the registered institution |
| Family reunification | Applicants with a qualifying Argentine or resident family member | Civil-status records establishing the relationship and the relative’s identity and status |
| Rentista | Applicants supported by qualifying foreign assets or resources | Evidence of the assets or funds, lawful origin, required amount and authorized transfer into Argentina |
| Pensionado | Applicants receiving a qualifying foreign pension | A certificate confirming a regular, permanent pension meeting the minimum amount |
MERCOSUR nationality
For people covered by this route, nationality supplies the immigration basis without an employer, pension or study program. Migraciones currently lists nationals by birth of Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela. It also covers people born outside MERCOSUR who have held naturalized nationality for at least five years in Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru or Uruguay. The naturalization rule therefore does not cover exactly the same list of countries.
The official MERCOSUR application page publishes a two-year temporary residence period. Holding residence in one of these countries, without qualifying nationality, does not meet this nationality requirement.
Employment in Argentina
The ordinary employment route requires an employer in Argentina who can support the application. The published worker requirements call for a signed pre-employment agreement setting out the duties, working hours, employment term, workplace, salary and employer’s CUIT (tax identification number). Signatures must be certified by a notary or a Migraciones officer. The employer must also provide its tax registration and registration with RENURE, the immigration authority’s register of organizations and individuals requesting the admission or stay of international applicants.
The checklist additionally requires the employer’s alta temprana (employee registration with the tax authority) within 30 calendar days of the start of the residence application. A job offer should therefore be reviewed together with the employer’s ability to supply the required documents. A contract with an overseas company, by itself, does not establish eligibility under this route.
Recognized studies
For the ordinary student route, confirm the status of the program before paying tuition for immigration purposes. The student application requirements cover regular enrollment in officially recognized secondary, tertiary, university or postgraduate studies. The institution must be registered with Migraciones and provide a constancia de inscripción electrónica (electronic enrollment confirmation).
Recognition of the institution does not make every course it offers eligible for temporary residence. Under Disposición 2802/2023, the student residence regulation, nonformal courses and several exchange or mobility programs fall under transitory residence. This distinction affects both the permit and access to a DNI. Ask the institution which immigration classification applies to the exact program you intend to attend.
Family reunification
The current family reunification category includes the spouse, parent or child of an Argentine citizen. For a family member who holds foreign nationality and Argentine permanent or temporary residence, the eligible relationships are spouse, parent, an unmarried and nonemancipated child under 18, or an adult child with a disability. Marriage or birth records establish the relationship, alongside evidence of the relative’s identity and immigration status.
A registered unión convivencial (legally recognized cohabiting union) can also support an application under Disposición 4880/2015, as amended. Simply dating an Argentine or sharing an apartment does not establish that registered legal relationship. If you have a partnership document issued abroad, its recognition and any necessary local registration need to be checked. LIA’s article on residency through an Argentine partner examines that question more closely.
Since the May 2025 reform, family reunification is expressly included as a temporary residence category. Older advice that marriage to an Argentine necessarily leads directly to permanent residence is outdated. However, children born abroad to Argentine citizens should also review the separate permanent residence route available to them.
Rentista and pensionado
Rentista (residence based on qualifying foreign assets or resources) requires more than showing that you can afford to live in Argentina. Migraciones’ rentista checklist focuses on returns from assets you own, such as financial instruments, real estate or company holdings, and excludes remuneration for personal work. Depending on the source, documents such as ownership records, leases, distribution statements and bank records can help explain what the income is and where it comes from.
Savings require a more careful analysis. Disposición 1732/2023, in its amended text, also allows consideration of applicants’ own funds deposited in foreign bank accounts when their lawful origin is conclusively established. Before approval, the rule requires verification that the funds needed for the requested residence period have entered Argentina through banks or financial institutions authorized by the Argentine Central Bank, using authorized mechanisms. A balance alone does not establish those conditions. An application relying on accumulated capital needs a review of its source, sufficiency and transfer arrangements.
Pensionado (residence based on a pension) is a separate route. The official pension checklist requires certification from a government, international organization or private company showing a regular, permanent pension for services performed abroad. Being retired, without a qualifying pension or another eligible basis, is not enough.
Both categories use a minimum benchmark of five Salarios Mínimos, Vitales y Móviles, or SMVM (Argentina’s statutory minimum wage), under Disposición 3446/2023. Because the wage changes, a fixed dollar figure is an unreliable way to assess eligibility. Check the applicable benchmark when preparing the application, together with the evidence required for the particular source of funds.
What this means for remote workers
A foreign salary should not be relabeled as passive income, and remote employment alone does not establish eligibility for the local employee route. A remote worker may instead qualify through nationality, family or another independently supported category. Argentina also has a digital nomad transitory residence for eligible nationals who do not require a tourist visa and provide remote services to clients or employers abroad. It allows an initial stay of up to 180 days, renewable for the same period. It is a distinct, shorter-term option and does not itself provide temporary residence or a DNI.
Applying after entering Argentina as a tourist
For an ordinary visa-exempt tourist admission, the starting question is whether your nationality benefits from a bilateral tourist visa exemption. Disposición 1520/2024 permits nationals covered by those exemptions to request a change of immigration category, provided they meet the requirements of the residence sought.
The same rule treats consular visas, AVE (electronic travel authorizations) and TIE24H (electronic entry processing) as prior authorizations. Entering through an electronic system does not make the admission equivalent to an ordinary bilateral visa exemption. For someone whose nationality requires prior authorization, changing from tourism to work or study is generally restricted. Express exceptions include family reunification and certain admissions under Article 24(f), (g) or (h) followed by temporary residence to continue the same activity. Migraciones may authorize other cases exceptionally through a reasoned decision; that discretion should not be treated as an available standard route.
Check this before relying on an in-country application, particularly if your stay has expired or you have received an immigration notice. LIA’s guide to applying for residency after entering as a tourist develops the distinction. The timing rules also deserve attention: the regulation on category changes specifies the final ten days of a transitory stay as the filing window. Prepare the documents earlier and confirm how that deadline applies to your submission.
Documents for Argentine residency
For the routes discussed here, prepare a general file and a second set of documents proving the category. The general file normally includes:
- Identity: a valid passport, or an accepted regional identity document where the MERCOSUR rules allow it.
- Lawful entry: the relevant entry record and any visa or authorization used. RaDEX verifies entry and may request the entry receipt or passport endorsement. A missing physical stamp does not necessarily mean there is no electronic record.
- An address in Argentina: the address where you actually live, supported in an accepted form.
- Argentine criminal-record clearance: required from age 16 under the applicable residence rules. The ordinary RaDEX procedure incorporates the request, so it should not normally be ordered separately.
- Foreign criminal-record certificates: the published temporary residence checklists require certificates from countries where you lived for more than one year during the previous three years, subject to the age requirement and applicable exceptions.
- Category evidence: the employment, enrollment, financial or family documents described above, with any required authentication and translation.
For foreign criminal records, map your recent residence history before ordering a certificate. The rule concerns where you lived, so the country of nationality is not automatically the only country involved. Confirm that the issuing authority provides the certificate required for immigration, including the relevant criminal-record and pending-proceedings information. A private screening report should not be assumed to replace an official certificate.
An address requirement does not always mean you must obtain a police certificate. Disposición 396/2022 accepts alternatives including a domicile certificate, utility bill in the applicant’s name, lease, an existing DNI, or a sworn declaration. Migraciones can request additional evidence when objective reasons justify it. Use the method accepted for your application and keep the declared address accurate.
Birth certificates are not a universal requirement for every adult application. They are relevant where they establish the family relationship relied on, and for minors. The published non-MERCOSUR instructions expressly distinguish an adult applying through work or studies from someone using a birth record to prove eligibility.
Applicants under 18 also need an authenticated birth certificate and parental authorization. The temporary residence instructions provide for one parent’s participation with a valid DNI. Where neither parent lives in Argentina, they require a designated guardian with lawful residence and proof of appointment. Any parental dispute needs separate review.
Certificate validity and recent travel
Documents do not all share one expiration rule. For foreign criminal certificates, the published non-MERCOSUR instructions use three months from issuance unless the document specifies a different validity period. Under the MERCOSUR instructions in Disposición 1637/2022, the default is 90 calendar days when no validity is stated. Those instructions also accept a certificate that was valid when the applicant entered Argentina but later expired, if the applicant has not subsequently returned to the issuing country. Do not extend that exception to every nationality or procedure. Check the applicable rule before ordering certificates too early or assuming an old certificate remains usable after travel.
Preparing documents issued abroad
Authentication and translation serve different purposes. An apostille authenticates the official signature on a document; it does not translate its contents. For documents covered by the Hague Apostille Convention between the issuing country and Argentina, arrange the apostille through the competent authority in the issuing country. Where that convention does not apply, the usual alternative is the relevant chain of legalization involving the Argentine consulate, unless an applicable agreement provides another route.
For a filing in Argentina, documents in another language generally require translation into Spanish by a traductor público (registered public translator), with certification by the relevant professional translators’ association. A translation prepared by an overseas translation service does not automatically satisfy that rule. Annex II, Article 13 of Decree 616/2010 separately allows translations by the consular authority or a locally registered translator for documents presented to an Argentine consulate. The correct preparation therefore depends on where you will submit the document.
There are specific exceptions. The MERCOSUR translation agreement covers listed identity, birth, marriage and criminal-record documents, including qualifying Brazilian documents in Portuguese, subject to the authority’s ability to request a translation where there are substantiated doubts. The MERCOSUR instructions also recognize certain legalizations by the issuing country’s consulate in Argentina. Neither exception should be applied to every foreign document or every language.
Before traveling, identify which foreign certificates you need and how their issuing authorities authenticate them. Some can be requested remotely; others require local arrangements. Spanish public translations for an Argentine filing can be organized in Argentina once the documents and their authentication are complete. Have the complete document reviewed before translating it, so a missing apostille or incorrect certificate does not force you to repeat the work.
The application process through RaDEX
The ordinary in-country applications discussed here start through RaDEX’s general residence procedure. You must be physically in Argentina to use this procedure, and the system checks lawful entry. Online access from another country does not turn it into an overseas application channel. The RaDEX portal separately identifies corporate and fee-exempt procedures, so confirm the correct route if either applies.
Once you have checked eligibility and prepared the file, the main stages are:
- Enter the applicant’s details and select the residence basis. Use an email address you monitor. Include each family member’s details and documents where applying together.
- Complete the applicable payments. These can include the residence application, Argentine criminal-record certificate and DNI. After payment is credited, the system provides credentials for the document-submission stage.
- Upload the supporting documents and finish the submission. Creating an account, generating payment slips or saving an incomplete upload does not complete this stage. Keep the confirmation and subsequent communications.
- Follow the instructions to formalize the application. Migraciones reviews whether the file can proceed and may request further information before scheduling an appointment. Attend at the specified office with original documents, as required by the official RaDEX guide. Completing the upload and receiving an appointment should not be confused with obtaining a precaria or an approved residence.
- Follow the case through to a decision. Respond to requests through the indicated channel and within the deadline in the notice. If a precaria is issued, check its dates and arrange renewal when necessary. The provisional permit and the eventual residence decision are separate documents.
If Migraciones requests additional documents, identify exactly what needs to be resolved. An authenticated certificate, a correction to personal details and further evidence of eligibility call for different responses. If a document cannot be supplied by the stated deadline, address that issue before the deadline rather than leaving the request unanswered.
For applications made from abroad, the procedure may involve a permiso de ingreso (entry permit) and the Argentine consulate. Requirements can differ from the domestic checklist. For example, the family reunification entry-permit procedure includes evidence of the sponsoring person’s financial means and specifies local registration for a cohabiting union established abroad. Confirm the overseas procedure before assuming you can use the same documents and sequence as an applicant already in Argentina.
Residence validity, the DNI and renewal
There is no single duration for temporary residency in Argentina. The published procedures give two years for MERCOSUR nationality and one year for the ordinary worker, rentista and pensionado routes. Family reunification can be granted for up to three years when the qualifying relative is Argentine or a permanent resident; where that relative is a temporary resident, the authorization follows that person’s residence period. The period granted in your decision is the one to use for planning.
Student residence requires particular care when comparing sources. Article 7.2 of Disposición 2802/2023 provides for up to two years for a full program in the official education system, while the current student service page publishes a one-year period. The regulation establishes the permitted duration; the service page describes the published procedure. Neither supports promising that every student will receive two years. Confirm the proposed term for the specific program and check the decision when issued.
Once residence is approved, the DNI process depends on that approved status. RaDEX can include the DNI payment, but a payment receipt is not a DNI or a residence approval. If you already hold valid residence and need to complete identification separately, follow Renaper’s instructions for residents with foreign nationality, rather than starting an unnecessary new residence application.
For renewal, Migraciones publishes a filing window within the 60 days before temporary residence expires. Its residence FAQ also describes a late renewal request within 30 days after expiration, with a 50% surcharge, after which the right to request that renewal lapses. That late-filing provision is not an extension of your authorized stay. Plan to file while your residence is valid.
Renewal requires evidence that the relevant conditions continue. The worker renewal checklist, for example, permits proof of continuing employment or a new employment contract and requires the new employer’s RENURE registration when the employer changes. If your circumstances have changed, review whether a renewal under the existing category is appropriate or a different category needs to be requested.
Working and traveling during and after the application
A valid precaria carries the permissions described above. An account registration, fee receipt or appointment email does not substitute for that permit. After approval, Article 51 of the Immigration Law allows temporary residents to undertake paid employment or independent work during their authorized stay. The conditions supporting their residence still matter. Transitory residents have a more limited position: paid activity generally requires an applicable exception or express authorization.
Before traveling with a precaria, check that it will remain valid for your return and that your travel document is valid. Migraciones’ online precaria renewal instructions state that this renewal is processed only for applicants who are in Argentina. Do not plan a trip around renewing it online while abroad.
Long absences also matter after approval. The 2025 amendment to Article 62 makes an absence of six months or more a ground for cancellation of temporary residence, with specified exceptions, including express immigration authorization. Holding an unexpired DNI does not resolve that issue. If you expect to spend an extended period abroad, review the applicable exception or authorization before leaving.
Frequently asked questions
How long does approval take, and does a preferential appointment guarantee a faster decision?
There is no single approval period that can safely be promised across these categories and individual files. Migraciones expressly states that a preferential appointment provides an earlier appointment, not immediate resolution. Document preparation, payment processing, appointment scheduling and the substantive decision are separate stages.
What are the government fees?
Use the official migration fee schedule and the payment instructions generated for your procedure. The schedule distinguishes MERCOSUR from non-MERCOSUR applicants and domestic from consular procedures. Residence, DNI and criminal-record charges should be checked separately, together with any applicable exemption. Fees were reviewed for this article on October 5, 2026; consult the live schedule when filing.
Does each family member need to qualify as a worker, student or rentista?
Each person needs an immigration basis, but it need not be the same basis. An eligible spouse or child may apply through family reunification with a qualifying resident. Relationship, age and status requirements still apply; inclusion in a family application does not eliminate them. The family entry-permit requirements also illustrate why the documentation must be checked for each person and procedure.
Is health insurance part of the immigration requirements?
For entry into Argentina, Article 34, as amended in 2025, requires a sworn declaration stating the purpose of entry and that the traveler has health insurance, together with the conditions established by regulation. This is an entry requirement and should be checked separately from the documents listed for an in-country residence application.
Does temporary residence automatically become permanent?
No. Permanent residence requires a separate application and assessment. The published route based on established residence uses two years of qualifying temporary residence for MERCOSUR nationals and three years for non-MERCOSUR nationals, alongside financial, physical-presence and other requirements. Reaching the anniversary alone does not change your status, and time held only under a precaria does not supply the qualifying residence period.
