If you are a foreigner, you can generally get an Argentine DNI once the Dirección Nacional de Migraciones has granted you temporary or permanent residence.
Being in Argentina as a tourist is not enough. Having a residencia precaria (provisional residence permit) while your residence application is pending is also not, by itself, enough to obtain the DNI.
This distinction matters because many people use “residency,” “precaria” and “DNI” as if they were the same thing. Legally, they are different stages and documents.
Under Article 30 of Argentina’s Migration Law, Law 25,871, foreigners with permanent or temporary residence may obtain a DNI. Migraciones also states in its current guidance that transitory residence does not generally qualify for a DNI.
| Your status in Argentina | Can you generally get a DNI? |
|---|---|
| Tourist | No |
| Residence application pending with a precaria | Not yet |
| Temporary residence granted | Yes |
| Permanent residence granted | Yes |
| Transitory residence | Generally no |
| Digital nomad residence | No, because it is transitory |
| Temporary residence expiring within the next 60 days | Renew or regularize the residence first |
The DNI and your immigration status are two different things
The Documento Nacional de Identidad, or DNI, is Argentina’s national identity document. RENAPER, the National Registry of Persons, issues it.
Migraciones decides your immigration status.
That means the usual order is:
- You qualify for an Argentine residence category.
- Migraciones grants temporary or permanent residence.
- You obtain the DNI that reflects that residence.
A DNI is not a separate way to become a resident. You do not normally apply for a DNI first and use it to obtain residence later.
This is why a person who has lived in Buenos Aires for a year as a tourist does not become eligible for a DNI simply because they have an address, a lease or a long period of physical presence in Argentina.
Can I get a DNI with a residencia precaria?
Normally, no.
A residencia precaria (provisional residence permit) is an authorization that Migraciones may issue while a residence application is being decided. Under the current text of Article 20 of Law 25,871, it can allow the holder to remain in Argentina, leave and re-enter, work and study during its validity.
But the same law separates the precaria from temporary and permanent residence. Article 30 gives access to the DNI to foreigners with temporary or permanent residence.
So if your RaDEX file is still pending and you only have a precaria, the fact that you can legally work or study does not mean that RENAPER must already issue your DNI.
This is one of the most common sources of confusion in practice.
There was another important change in 2025. Decree 366/2025 amended the Migration Law and expressly states that time spent only under a precaria does not count as residence for certain purposes, including the residence period used to establish eligibility for permanent residence or naturalization. The precaria is useful and legally important, but it should not be treated as if Migraciones had already granted the residence you requested.
Which residence categories give you a DNI?
The key distinction is the legal category granted by Migraciones.
According to Migraciones’ current residence guidance:
- temporary residence can lead to a temporary DNI;
- permanent residence can lead to a permanent DNI;
- transitory residence does not generally allow the holder to obtain a DNI.
The name of the program can be misleading. Always check whether the actual immigration decision says temporaria (temporary), permanente (permanent) or transitoria (transitory).
Does my nationality matter for getting the DNI?
Your nationality usually affects how you qualify for residence, not the DNI rule that applies after residence is granted.
For example, nationals of MERCOSUR member and associated countries can generally use nationality itself as the basis for a temporary residence application. Migraciones currently grants this residence for up to two years under its MERCOSUR nationality residence procedure.
A person from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Russia, most European countries, China or India does not have the same MERCOSUR nationality route. A non-MERCOSUR applicant normally needs another qualifying ground for residence, such as work, recognized studies, rentista (passive-income) status, pensioner status or family reunification.
Once temporary or permanent residence has actually been granted, however, the basic DNI rule is the same.
| Nationality or situation | Main DNI consequence |
|---|---|
| MERCOSUR or associated-country national | Nationality may provide a direct route to temporary residence, which then allows a DNI |
| Brazilian national | A separate bilateral permanent residence route may also be available in qualifying cases |
| United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Russia and most European countries | A separate residence criterion is normally required before the DNI |
| China or India | A separate residence criterion is normally required, and entry or visa rules may also affect how the residence case must be structured |
If you are already in Argentina as a tourist, the separate question is whether you can lawfully change from your current immigration category to the residence category you want. See our guide on switching from tourist status to residence in Argentina.
Can students get a DNI in Argentina?
Sometimes. The type of student residence matters.
A foreigner enrolled as a regular student in a recognized secondary, tertiary, university or specialized program may qualify for temporary student residence under Article 23(j) of Law 25,871 and DNM Disposition 2802/2023. That residence can lead to a DNI. Migraciones explains the temporary student category here.
But not every immigration status connected to education is temporary residence.
For example, international mobility programs, some non-official courses, exchange programs and other shorter educational activities may fall under transitory student residence under Article 24(h). Migraciones currently treats those cases separately, including under Disposition 2802/2023.
That distinction can decide whether you are entitled to a DNI.
So “I have a student visa” is not enough information. The useful question is: what residence category did Migraciones actually grant?
Can digital nomads get a DNI in Argentina?
Not through the digital nomad residence alone.
Argentina’s current digital nomad permission is a transitory residence under Article 24(h) of Law 25,871 and DNM Disposition 758/2022. It is granted for up to 180 days and may be extended once for a similar period.
Migraciones describes the category as transitory in its official digital nomad residence page.
Because the Migration Law limits ordinary DNI eligibility to temporary and permanent residents, a digital nomad who specifically wants an Argentine DNI usually needs to qualify for a different residence category.
This matters for people who choose the digital nomad route assuming that every Argentine “residence” comes with a DNI. It does not.
What if I obtained my Argentine residence through a consulate abroad?
If you obtained a temporary or permanent Argentine residence before traveling to Argentina, you do not need to start the same residence application again after arrival.
For residence obtained through a permiso de ingreso (entry permit) and the corresponding Argentine consular visa, Migraciones states that once the person enters Argentina in the approved category, the person becomes resident and, where applicable, must obtain the DNI within 60 business days of entry.
The official procedure is explained on the Migraciones entry permit page.
This is different from the situation of a tourist who enters Argentina first and only later starts a residence application from inside the country.
How do I get my first DNI after residence is granted?
The current RENAPER procedure is called primera identificación para extranjeros (first identification for foreigners).
RENAPER states that this step is for foreigners who have already received temporary or permanent residence from Migraciones. The current procedure is available on the official first DNI page.
The practical sequence is usually:
- Obtain the residence decision from Migraciones. Your residence must be temporary or permanent.
- Check whether the DNI fee was already generated through RaDEX. Migraciones’ RaDEX system can generate the residence fee, criminal-record fee and DNI fee as part of the application order when applicable. Paying the DNI fee does not mean the residence has already been approved.
- Use the first-identification procedure if a separate DNI appointment is required. RENAPER’s current instructions allow the applicant to choose a Registro Civil (civil registry) within the relevant jurisdiction or book a RENAPER documentation center through Mi Argentina.
- Attend the appointment and keep the receipt. RENAPER uses the application ID on that receipt to track the DNI.
- Receive the DNI by mail or collect it if instructed. Migraciones states that the postal service normally makes two delivery attempts before the document is redirected for collection.
RENAPER also states that the first DNI for a foreigner cannot be processed at an airport documentation center.
What documents should I take to the DNI appointment?
For an adult’s first foreigner DNI, RENAPER’s current public procedure does not publish a long standalone document list. The essential legal requirement is that the temporary or permanent residence has already been issued by Migraciones.
For practical purposes, keep the following available:
- your valid passport or identity document used in the immigration file;
- the Migraciones residence decision or certificado de radicación (residence certificate), if available;
- the appointment confirmation;
- proof of DNI payment, if you already paid it through RaDEX or another authorized channel;
- any receipt or reference number already issued for the DNI process.
For minors, RENAPER requires the involvement of a parent or legal representative and, where applicable, documents proving guardianship or legal representation. The specific requirements appear on the first identification page.
How much does the first DNI cost in 2026?
As of September 8, 2026, RENAPER lists the fee for a foreigner’s first identification at ARS 20,000.
The same current tariff applies to several later foreigner-DNI procedures, including a new copy after a change of immigration category, extension, change of address or other update.
Because Argentine administrative fees can change, check the current RENAPER tariff before paying.
How long does it take to get the DNI?
Do not confuse the time needed for the DNI appointment with the time needed for your immigration case.
RENAPER’s current first-identification page says the in-person DNI procedure itself takes around 15 minutes. That does not mean a foreigner receives a DNI 15 minutes after starting a residence application.
If your residence is still under review, the DNI cannot move to the normal issuance stage until the immigration status has been resolved. In practice, that immigration stage is often the longer part of the process.
After the DNI request is taken, you can follow it using the application ID provided by RENAPER. The official foreigner-DNI FAQ explains the delivery process and what happens after unsuccessful delivery attempts: DNI for foreigners FAQ.
There is no reason to assume that another person’s timeline will match yours. A case waiting for Migraciones to approve residence is different from a residence that is already approved and only waiting for RENAPER production and delivery.
What if my temporary residence expires soon?
If your temporary residence is already expired, or will expire within the next 60 days, RENAPER’s current guidance says you should regularize or renew your immigration status with Migraciones before trying to obtain or update the DNI.
See the official DNI for foreigners page.
This rule becomes especially relevant when someone waits until the final weeks of a temporary residence before trying to replace a lost DNI or update immigration status on the card.
Does a temporary DNI expire when my residence expires?
Yes.
Article 32 of Law 25,871 provides that a DNI issued to a temporary resident is issued for the same period as the immigration status and can be renewed when the residence is extended.
RENAPER’s new electronic DNI rules also state that a foreigner’s DNI is valid until the residence expiration date. The current electronic document format was approved by RENAPER Disposition 55/2026 and entered into force on February 1, 2026.
The 2026 foreigner DNI also records the immigration category on the back as TEMPORARIA or PERMANENTE, together with residence data and the Código Único de Identificación Laboral (Unique Labor Identification Code, or CUIL).
Does a permanent DNI expire?
The physical document does. Permanent residence itself does not have an ordinary expiration date.
Under RENAPER Disposition 55/2026, the normal DNI validity period for people over 14 is 15 years, and the same renewal schedule applies to foreign permanent residents.
But the expiration date printed on the card and the continued validity of the immigration status are separate questions. Under the current Article 62(e) of Law 25,871, Migraciones can cancel permanent residence when the resident remains outside Argentina for one year or more, subject to the exceptions stated in the law. Temporary residence has a shorter six-month absence rule.
So a foreigner’s permanent DNI should not be used as the only way to assess whether the underlying permanent residence is still valid after a long period abroad.
I changed from temporary to permanent residence. Do I need a new DNI?
Yes, you should update the document so that it reflects the new immigration category.
RENAPER’s current tariff expressly includes a new foreigner DNI for a cambio de categoría (change of immigration category), and its document rules require the foreigner DNI to show whether the holder is a temporary or permanent resident.
A permanent residence decision and an old card still showing temporary residence should not be treated as the final updated documentation of your status.
For a broader comparison, see temporary vs permanent residence in Argentina.
Is a permanent DNI the same as Argentine citizenship?
No.
A foreigner with permanent residence can hold a DNI and still remain a foreign national. Permanent residence and Argentine citizenship are separate legal statuses.
The foreigner DNI itself identifies the holder’s nationality and immigration category. If the person later becomes an Argentine citizen, RENAPER updates the person’s documentation under the rules that apply to naturalized Argentines.
If citizenship is your longer-term goal, see Argentine citizenship after two years.
What can I do while I am waiting for the DNI?
If Migraciones has issued a valid precaria while your temporary or permanent residence application is pending, you may still be able to work legally before the physical DNI arrives.
Argentina’s labor guidance states that a foreigner with a valid precaria and a CUIL issued by ANSES can work in the country. ANSES also has a procedure to obtain a CUIL before the foreigner has a DNI in certain immigration situations.
See the official pages on work authorization for foreigners and obtaining a CUIL.
This does not mean every private bank, fintech platform or online service will accept a precaria in place of a DNI. Private onboarding systems often have their own identification requirements. Legally being allowed to work and having a physical DNI are separate questions.
What changed recently with the DNI for foreigners?
Two recent changes are especially relevant.
First, Decree 366/2025 changed several parts of Argentina’s Migration Law. For DNI purposes, one practical consequence is that the precaria is now even more clearly separated from residence already granted. The current Article 20 confirms that a precaria can authorize stay, travel, work and study while the case is pending, but does not itself create a right to a favorable residence decision or count as residence for the purposes specified by the law.
Second, RENAPER Disposition 55/2026 introduced the new electronic DNI format from February 1, 2026. The foreigner card continues to identify the residence category and immigration file information, and now follows the new electronic document specifications.
One technical point is worth mentioning. A validity paragraph in RENAPER’s 2026 technical annex contains a reference to “residencia transitoria.” However, Article 30 of Law 25,871 and Migraciones’ current public guidance state that temporary and permanent residence are the categories that enable ordinary DNI issuance, and the same RENAPER annex describes the foreigner card’s category field as TEMPORARIA or PERMANENTE. A transitory residence should therefore not be treated as a general DNI route simply because of that isolated wording in the technical annex.
Common problems that delay a foreigner’s DNI
The problem is often not the plastic card itself. It is the immigration file behind it.
Common issues include:
- the residence is still under review and has not actually been granted;
- the applicant assumes that having a precaria means the DNI should already exist;
- the person received a transitory immigration status that does not qualify for a DNI;
- the temporary residence is close to expiry and must be renewed first;
- there is a mismatch in name, date of birth, nationality or other data between Migraciones and RENAPER;
- the residence category changed but the DNI was never updated;
- the delivery address is incorrect or the applicant misses both postal delivery attempts.
If the residence has already been resolved but the DNI does not arrive, use RENAPER’s tracking system and the contact routes listed in the official foreigner-DNI FAQ.
Frequently asked questions
I am American and already live in Buenos Aires. Can I get a DNI?
Yes, if Migraciones grants you temporary or permanent residence. Living in Buenos Aires as a tourist is not enough by itself. As a United States citizen, you normally need a qualifying non-MERCOSUR residence ground before the DNI stage.
I am Russian. Can I get an Argentine DNI without permanent residence?
Yes. Permanent residence is not required. A Russian citizen who obtains temporary residence can obtain a temporary DNI. A tourist stay or a precaria alone does not create the same DNI entitlement.
I am from India or China. Is the DNI rule different for me?
The DNI rule after residence is granted is essentially the same: temporary or permanent residence can qualify. The more complicated issue may be how you entered Argentina and whether your immigration category can be changed from inside the country. Review that before starting the residence application.
I have a precaria. Why do I still not have a DNI?
Because the precaria is an interim immigration authorization while the residence case is pending. Under Article 30 of Law 25,871, ordinary DNI eligibility is tied to temporary or permanent residence, not merely to having a precaria.
I am a digital nomad. Can I use that residence to obtain a DNI?
No, not under the current digital nomad category alone. The Argentine digital nomad permission is a transitory residence under Article 24(h) and DNM Disposition 758/2022.
I am studying in Argentina. Will I get a DNI?
It depends on the student category. A regular student in a recognized full educational program may receive temporary student residence and then a DNI. A mobility, exchange or other transitory student category may not qualify.
I already have temporary residence but it expires in 45 days. Can I apply for the DNI now?
RENAPER’s current guidance says that if the residence expires within the next 60 days, you should first regularize or renew the residence with Migraciones.
I obtained my residence through an Argentine consulate before traveling. When should I get the DNI?
Migraciones states that people who enter Argentina with the approved resident status through the entry-permit process must obtain the DNI, where applicable, within 60 business days after entering the country.
Can I work while my DNI is still pending?
Potentially yes. A valid precaria can authorize work, and ANSES can issue a CUIL in qualifying cases before the DNI is available. The DNI and the legal authorization to work are related but separate issues.
My residence was approved but the physical DNI has not arrived. What should I do?
Track the DNI using the RENAPER application ID. If the immigration case is already resolved, use RENAPER’s contact channels rather than treating it as an unresolved RaDEX residence application. The official Migraciones DNI FAQ explains the distinction.
Do I need a new DNI after becoming a permanent resident?
Yes. The document should be updated to show the new permanent immigration category. RENAPER treats a change of immigration category as a reason to issue a new foreigner DNI.
